Fatal tragedy was miraculously averted yesterday evening, Saturday 15 August, 2020, around 7.15pm, when an iron-ladden flat-bed trailer with registration number KSF124SG lost control downhill on the Ikorodu expressway beside the Oluwo Odikan market, ramming into four cars viz a black Toyota Corolla LE car with registration number KSF531FQ, an ash-coloured Toyota Corolla with registration number JJJ869FV, a Sienna, a red Opel car with registration number BDG390AR, and a truck also conveying iron with registration number EPE94XY which was sandwiched between the trailer and the concrete pillars of the pedestrian bridge.
According to reliable eye-witness accounts, the trailer driver claimed that his brakes failed and he lost total control causing a massive pile-up as is unprecedented in the history of the area.
However, no fatalities were reported, except for a broken arm and slight bruises sustained by one of the occupants of the battered vehicles.
Perhaps, the most fortunate of the accident victims was one Mr. Ade, driver of the red car that has now been reduced a condemned pile of metal by virtue of the incident.
Our reporter met him surrounded by well-wishers, being congratulated for escaping the jaws of death unscathed. According to him, the driver suddenly lost control and all he heard was a loud crash.
“Thank God for my life and thanks to all my well-wishers. I thank God for my life”, he said.
The incident caused a massive traffic grid-lock on both sides of the road and massive crowds could be observed, either trekking to their destinations, or gathered in groups, discussing the unprecedented incidence.
Not long after, heavy-duty LAWMA equipment was recorded heading for the scene of the pile-up, as Law enforcement officers and LASTMA officials struggled to manage the situation.
