Extra-judicial Killing: Edo Youth Dies In SARS Custody

A young man in Edo State has been unlawfully arrested and tortured to death by some officers of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS)

He was arrested by the law enforcement officers at Megon Guest House near his house while charging his phone.

According to elder sister of the victim, Mercy Obazee, the young mn was arrested by SARS officials on March 6, 2020 and was not allowed to make calls while others also arrested including owner of the hotel were released.

She alleged that her brother was tortured by the police, leading to his death.

Obazee appealed to the Talakawa’s Parliament to help demand justice for the unlawful arrest and killing of her brother by SARS personnel.

Reacting to the matter, one of the leaders of the Talakawa’s Parliament said,

“On behalf of Lady Mercy Obazee, we want to appeal to the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, to order an investigation to ascertain the cause of death of an Edo youth, who died in SARS custody and was deposited in the mortuary without the consent of his people.

“We are tired of losing our youth unjustly. We say no to injustice.”

In a similar event, Special Anti Robbery Squad attached to De Topic supermarket at the Elelenwo area of Port Harcourt shot and killed a 20-year-old aspiring artist, Daniel Chibuike to death as he was being chased by SARS operatives.

The young artist, popularly known as Sleek was was shot deadly on Saturday, September 19, 2020, around 4 pm after he and a friend were accosted by the operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS.

The late singer and his friend, Reuben, however, took to their heels upon sighting the SARS operative, who in turn chased them and began screaming that they were thieves.

The SARS operatives chased the duo who were coming out of Reuben’s house.

According to a source who spoke anonymously, “The SARS operatives, all of a sudden, started screaming that the duo were thieves prompting the MOPOL officer to open fire on them.

“Sleek died due to the inability of the police officers to take him to the hospital despite pleadings from his friend, adding that they left him to bleed to death in front of the supermarket.”

It was gathered that the Ruben was later transferred to the State Criminal Investigative Department from the Miniokoro police station while the SARS officers involved were also detained by the state police command.

The activities of the SARS officers did not go unnoticed by the Rivers State Governor, Nyesome Wike.
